Originară din Grecia, de unde s-a răspândit în Italia, Olanda, Anglia și America de Nord.
Face parte din genul Rubus (familia Rosaceae) și este un arbust de 40 – 60 cm, cu rădăcini superficiale subțiri, foliole verzi ovale (în formă de fascicul) și albicioase (pe dos), flori mici, alb-verzui sau roz și fructe roșii, galbene, albe sau negre, cu perișori galbeni.
Producția sa a crescut în ultimii ani, principali producători fiind Polonia, Serbia, Statele Unite și Mexic.
