Este originar din Sud-Estul Asiei. Face parte din familia Rutaceae, genul Citrus.
Este un copac cu mărime mijlocie, trunchi scurt, frunze cu limb mare, aripioare mici și spini, flori ușor parfumate, iar fructul este o hesperidă. Este cultivat pentru fructele sale cu gust plăcut și fără semințe, care se consumă proaspete și pot fi comercializate curățate și ambalate pentru consum, precum și sub formă de suc, gem sau jeleu.
Coaja are aplicații industriale, iar cei mai importanți producători sunt Brazilia, Statele Unite și Mexic.
