It originates from Asia and Europe. It belongs to the genus Rubus and to the Rosaceae family.
It is an annual herbaceous plant, with a pivotal root, a straight and branched stem, its leaves are alternate and their bottom surface is clearer, their edges are whole or slightly jagged and the flowers are white and placed on lateral inflorescences. Its fruit is a globose berry of dark blue or black color.
The United States is the world’s largest producer, although New Zealand and Chile also stand out, and most of the production goes to processing.
